Types of Red Wine

It is easy to go into your liquor store or wine store and be overwhelmed by the vast variety of wines.  If your new to drinking wine and are going for the reds, it is enough to make your head spin.  There are several types of red wine and your local wine store can help you decide what would fit your taste.  A great idea would to be going to a wine tasting party or make a trip to a winery and sample their wines.
Zinfandel (Zin-fan-del)  Is a very versatile wine grape.  Mainly found in California. The flavor profile tends to be a zesty with berries and a spicy undertone.  Pair it with pizza, pasta, grilled or barbecued meals.
Syrah (Sahra or Shi-raz) The two names are for the same grape variety.  The typical taste of the Syrah or Shiraz are of the wild blackberry fruits with a bit of spice.  Shiraz produces fine some of the best dark reds that have often have intense flavors.  Pair a Syrah/Shiraz with meats such as steak, beef, or stews etc.
Merlot (Mer-lo) One of the easiest wines to drink.  Great for beginner wine drinkers. The flavor profile is black-cherry and herbal notes.  You can pair a Merlot with anything and any time.
Cabernet Sauvignon (Ca-burr-nay so-veen-yaw) One of the best varieties of wines, and is often blended with cabernet franc and merlot and will often times gets the oak treatment. It is a full-bodied red wine and the flavor profile has currant qualities and bell pepper notes. When treated in oak, vanilla notes will be present in the wine.  Best paired with a simple red meat.
Malbec (Mal-bek) Originates in the French Bordeaux region. The profile depends greatly on which region it is grown in.  It is a easy-drinking wine and is a medium to full-bodied wine. Made of berries it will remind you of eating a jelly or a jam with hints of spice. It is great paired with any type of meat-based meals.
Sangiovese (San-gee-oh-ve-zee) Produced in the Tuscany region of  Italy, and until most recently in California, sangiovese is a medium-bodied wine with fresh blueberry, strawberry and plum with hints of cinnamon and spice.  It is great paired with an Italian or Mediterranean-style Cuisine.
The list of types of red wine can go on and on.  As a wine enthusiast or a connoisseur reading about wine and tasting wines will be the only way to truly find wine that you will enjoy to drink and wine that will compliment your meals.  You might even consider joining wine clubs and have different wines delivered to you, or join a wine group in your area to expand your knowledge and taste buds.
